Our Right to Heat & Eat
An incredible 49% of those in fuel poverty in London are estimated to be over 60. In 2007/08 there were some 2800 so-called ‘excess winter deaths’ in the capital. The majority of them were older people.
On the 30th of November the Mayor of London and Age Concern London held a conference at City Hall to highlight this growing problem. The event saw the premiere of ‘Warming Winter’, a short film commissioned by the Mayor, produced by Age Concern London, and made by older Londoners from the British Film Institute (BFI) Seniors Group. This film assists older people in getting the help and advice they need to stay warm and well in winter.
Age Concern London is launching a joint statement with the Greater London Forum for older people and Help the Aged called: ‘Our Right to Heat and Eat’. This document highlights the ‘postcode lottery’ of services offered from borough to borough, as well as the failings of the utility companies in dealing with older people.

Computers for older people project is still on!
The Computers for Older People scheme is still up and running in collaboration with PHS Maxitech. Computers are being distributed monthly in boroughs across London, as Age Concern London hopes to clear the current waiting list by January 2011. Due to this current waiting list, the scheme is NOT taking new recipients at present. To date over 1000s computers have been handed out to older people, including 200 that have been donated by Sainsbury’s.
If you have any further questions about the scheme, please contact Melissa Raudnask at Age Concern London on 0207 091 2591 or mraudnask@aclondon.org.uk
